Firefighters in Britain share many common denominators to US firefighters, a passion for assisting those in need, a tremendous amount of specialized training, and… a leading cause of line-of-duty deaths, myocardial infarction or heart attack. Per the U.S. Fire Administration’s 2012 report 39 of the total 81 firefighter deaths in 2012 were the result of a heart attack. The British Heart Foundation is doing some great research, finding the increased risk of firefighter heart attacks is likely related to the profound physical exertion, the psychological aspects of the work, pollution and gases surrounding the area of the fire that firefighters are exposed to after removing their SCBA and heat exposure. Watch the video below to learn about some of the interesting research and physiological changes that occur during firefighting activities.
Please remember to thank the men and women who place themselves at risk for the good of the community, and the families of those who have perished on the line, including the Granite Mountain Hotshots.
