Solxplore offers swiftwater and river rescue courses designed specifically for the needs of the audience, whether a beginning private rafter, a seasoned kayaker, professional Class V river guide or a member of a professional rescue agency. The American Canoe Association (ACA) allows Solxplore the flexibility to adapt the curriculum and pricing as necessary to provide courses that mesh with the needs of the students. Please click on either course for the course outline. This is only an example, as Solxplore will adapt the curriculum to the specific needs of the audience.
Our courses are taught using lecture, case-studies, demonstations, skills practice and scenarios, placing an emphasis on practice, practice and more practice, using highly qualified instructors.
Who are these courses for?
Everyone who may be required to provide rescue in a swiftwater environment: firefighters, river guides, private boaters…
What courses are offered?
ACA Essentials of River Safety & Rescue Level 2
ACA River Safety & Rescue Level 3
ACA Swiftwater Rescue Level 4 – The Swiftwater Rescue course teaches recognition and avoidance of common river hazards, execution of self-rescue techniques, and rescue techniques for paddlers in distress. Emphasis is placed both on personal safety and on simple, commonly used skills. Techniques for dealing with hazards that carry greater risks for both victim and rescuer, such as strainers, rescue vest applications, entrapments, and pins, also are practiced. Scenarios will provide an opportunity for participants to practice their skills both individually and within a team/group context.
Time: 2 days
ACA Swiftwater Rescue Advanced Level 5 – The Advanced Swiftwater Rescue course is aimed at trip leaders, boaters paddling on more challenging whitewater, and anyone desiring opportunities to develop their rescue skills. Critical judgment and rescue awareness, impacting both personal and group safety, are emphasized throughout the course. Although new skills may be taught, this class focuses on developing judgment and applying skills in rescue scenarios. Scope and content of the course will vary, based upon participant needs, interests and experience.
Time: 3 days
Prerequisites: ACA Swifwater Rescue Level 4
ACA Instructor Development Workshop/Instructor Certification Exam (IDW/ICE)
Solxplore offers these courses at a reasonable cost, so that they may be accessed by all. $100 per student, per day is the cost of courses.* Therefore, a two-day Level 4 Swiftwater Rescue course is $200 per student and a three day Level 5 Advanced Swiftwater Rescue course is $300 per student. Students returning for a swiftwater rescue course they have already completed with Solxplore may attend for half-price.
If you would like to combine either course with a CPR, First Aid or Wilderness First Responder/Wilderness Emergency Medical Responder (WFR/WEMR) course a special package rate will be created that includes a discount. Solxplore is one of the few companies that offers clients CPR, First Aid, WFR/WEMR and Swiftwater Rescue, with zero sacrifice in quality. In fact, the teaching method and curriculum is designed so that each course will strengthen and reinforce the principles presented within the other courses.
When and where are the courses held?
Anytime, anywhere. Period. Courses are designed specifically for the group that is receiving instruction. There is no sense teaching guides that run Pine Creek on the Arkansas River on the wide-open Colorado River or big water Cataract Canyon guides on narrow, technical creeks. Solxplore will come to your location and teach the course on the rivers that you run at the time of year that best suits your needs.
